Coming Up This Week - City Championship - Round 2

Below are a list of the most frequently asked question about the Cincinnati Chess Club. If you have any other questions, or would like more information, please contact us through our Contact page.

As a new member, do I need to let the club know before I show up for the first time?

No. Any week the club is open (about 50 weeks per year!), you are welcome to stop by at your convenience.

How do I know what is going on at the club this week?

Please see our Club Calendar for a list of the events for the rest of the year. In addition, we usually notify members of monthly events via email at the beginning of each month.

What if I am not interested in the tournament/event going on this week? Are there other options?

We always allow space for casual games and rated Ladder games at the club, regardless of what is on the schedule. There is usually a group of players not involved in a particular week's event who are playing games on the side.

Do I need to bring my own chess set and/or clock?

Bringing your own set and clock is encouraged, but not required. The club has both available for purchase but does not supply boards or clocks for club games. We rely on our members to bring their own equiptment, and bringing your own ensures you will always have a board to play on. Please make sure any sets you bring are tournament size.

Can my son/daugther join the club?

Absolutely! We encourage members of all ages and skill levels to join. We often have youth players at the club, though attendence of our youth members is still inconsistent. Many of our adult memebers are also willing to play games against children, and we have several members with experience in youth chess lessons who would be willing to offer advice on how to best get your child involved in chess.

Do I need to sign up for a membership right away?

We do not ask anyone to sign up for a membership immediately. Feel free to stop by the club a few times to get a feel for what is offered before committing to a membership. Membership rates are provided on our Membership page.

How can I pay for a membership or tournament entry fees?

We accept cash and checks, made out to the Cincinnati Chess Club, on site. Also, checks can be mailed to the following address if that is more convenient:

Jeff Davis (Treasurer)
6434 Pace Avenue
Cincinnati, OH 45213

Am I required to attend a certain number of events per year to keep my membership?

No, you can attend as much or as little as you would like. Memberships are good for one year regarless of your participation rate.
